MAGAZINE statement of intent
How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)
Production:
My brief is to create and produce the first two issues of a music magazine including front covers and contents pages, with a working website. My magazine will be targeted at audiences aged 16-25. This age group is familiar and comfortable with the online, digital world however there's a growing collection of young people passionate about music in its analogue form such as vinyl's, CDs and cassettes. The magazine will also promote live bands and small, upcoming artists in the local Kent area. I intend the magazine to stand out from the rest of the commercial available music magazines by challenging the conventional size; having the format precise dimensions of an LP. This will encourage the audience to collect the magazine and store them with their records. As the content of the magazine is both current and retrospective, it will also encourage the collectability of the publication. My covers will have a sense of branding through the use of my masthead being the same font and size. This will be placed in the central top of my front cover. My first front cover (001) the masthead will not be covered by the image of the artist as the magazine is new so it's important consumers know the name. Each cover will have a consistent colour scheme based on the image's colour palette, and my masthead's colour will change colour to match this. The cover image will have the artist looking to one side as a trade mark pose, in the spirit of i-D magazine, challenge the convention of direct mode of address and standing out on the news stand. The issue number will be placed slightly below masthead and the artist's name will not cover their face. To the right side of the artist, there will be conventional off-leads that will reflect the ethos of the publication.
Website:
During my research, I noted down the common C+C of music magazine websites. I will include these in my website. Firstly, I will have a header at the very top of the website which has the magazine's name 'PULSE' in the same font and style used in my covers to create brand identity. I will also use the same font throughout the magazine for a sleek look. I will take inspiration from the 'UNCUT' website and will have a main story (spotlight) promoting the interview with the most recent front cover artist. My magazine will have an emphasis on the importance of the local music space to grow by featuring 'PULSE RATE' where popular albums and local gigs are rated. There will also be a section on discovering local talent where in replacement of anonymous 'tips', PULSE will have an option for anonymous readers to sign up talented musicians or bands who they think should have their music shared or listened to. My hyperlinked page will be the interview with issue 002 artist with a brief introduction, the video and more questions below. As the reader scrolls, the bottom of the page will have another suggested video of the interview with issue 001 artist. The website will be constructed in sections that are easily navigational through the use of different background colours and titles with a variety of images to make it visually interesting.
How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)
To ensure that all the people looking at the front covers will want to visit my website, I will have a call to action QR code on my contents pages connecting to the website's interview. Also on my contents pages, I will include a link address to the magazine website. I will promote the audio visual piece at the top of my website by having it as the main story (spotlight) so it's one of the first things viewers will see. The latest issue (002) of my magazine will be next to the main story to encourage readers to buy and subscribe. Also, I will have a section called 'SHOP PULSE' where my audience can buy all the current and future issues of the magazine.
